~Esmeralda: Operation Doll~ Series 1: You are set free. #1
12” The first doll for the new series on this site will be an operation doll, which I am super excited about it. To see the full detail on how they are made please click here
~The story behind Esmeralda~
“Operation” is a huge MB game that has thrilled children for generations; the object of the game is to remove the body parts from the board with tweezers’ without touching the sides. Other wise a buzzer will go off. With the huge success and children needing a new toy for Christmas the idea was to merge a doll with the operation game. This was also a huge success and the doll flew of the shelves in minutes but that was 4 years ago.
Esmeralda now sits on a shelf staring into the bliss. Years have passed and the time has come. A blinding light pierces through the room and settles on the lonely doll. The light shimmers until a loud gasp can be heard as the light starts moving down the body of the doll turning what was plastic into flesh. Esmeralda can blink, turn her head and open her mouth. She is filled with happiness.
An intense scream slices through the room as blood pours from her chest, where the heart used to be now lays an empty hole.
~ 17 May 2010~ Step 1: Brain storm 1 & 2
Step 2: Basic Concept, This is how i imagine Esmeralda to look:)
~20 May 2010~
The armature, for this i will need:
Added a basic torso and baked once cooled,
Started adding clay in pancake form to the torso and waist,
Added a should and neck,
Added ribs, creases, collarbone, shoulder muscles, rib cage, shoulder blades,
Added the shoulder joint,
Carved a hole for the heart used tools to create a heart shape,
Added 2 basic shapes to arm and shoulder, this was left to settle.
~27 May 2010~
Looked at her today and she isn’t looking right, the sizes don’t match up with the Barbie, I think the bum is too large so the top of the thigh will look massive, removed the waist and bum. Started again. Looked at the shape again and the thigh goes straight down and the bum is the joint. Leaving the legs separate and just sculpting the bum, I have carved a hole for the leg like you do on a BJD doll.
~28 May 2010~ Spent a good while getting a rough shape for the hands and feet, also got the basic shape of the head. The eye sockets have been completed and baked, ready to be inserted into the head
~29 May 2010~
Continued with the hands and feet, getting all the little details in, also inserted the eyes and started sculpting the basic face features.
~30 May 2010~
Continued with the head; a lot of time was taken to check for all the details, hoping that the shocked and saddened expression comes through. Just remembered I had to leave a hole in the waist to attach the tweezers, drilled a small hole.
~31 June 2010~
Rough shape of the top of the thighs and arms were added had a little trouble trying to get the joints to look realistic got there in the end! This was left to settle. Just had a quick scan over hands, feet and head.
~3 June 2010~ Hands, feet and head where baked and once cooled glued onto the sculpture and left over night to dry. She’s looking good :)
~5 June 2010~ Just need to add detail to the ears and detail the elbow joint and she is ready to bake!
~6- 7 June 2010~
I did a quick check over the doll and added any little details that had been rubbed out and matched against pictures to check i had all the detail in there, Baked :)
I have also created rough pieces that will once sanded and shaped fit into the shapes on her body.
Started the sanding process.
~12 June 2010~
She is finished! One thing lead to another and she is done :( I am sad that i have finished her but happy i get to see her in 3D form. What has been done:
Smoothed the doll with finishing paper
The only think I need to do now before i put her on eBay is to create a custom built box.

I decided to use a shoe box to hold the doll in, measured, glued and cut the design.
Made a little pillow from silk with a yellow side.
Creased and ripped a longer piece of silk to portray a sheet, glued this to the side of the box.
Dented, ripped and scrubbed the box so that it would look old and used.
Re applied crystal lacquer to her eyes
Painted the white near the joints to show stress marks.
